I’m going all Duggar on us. I’ve made my own laundry detergent now, twice. Yes, twice. I love it…it isn’t that hard, for our family it lasts a really long time and it’s inexpensive. I actually feel like my clothes are cleaner with this detergent. So, for this Pinterest review, I’m giving a huge thumbs up.
I should first mention that I didn’t follow the recipe exactly, but pretty close. Here is the recipe that I used.
1 box Borax
1 4 lb. box Baking Soda
1 box Washing Soda
2 bars Fels-Naptha Soap
5 1/2 cups Oxyclean (Any brand will do. This is about 2 small containers or 1/2 of a large container or 3 to 3 1/2 lbs.)
1. You begin by shredding the Fels-Naptha bars. I tried this more than one way, using my Ninja and grating it with my cheese grater. The cheese grater is more work but it really turns out better. It really isn’t that much work but certainly more than pushing the button on the Ninja.
2. Next I combined all the ingredients in my big roasting pan. The blog where I got the recipe suggested a 5 gallon bucket but I didn’t have one. Then I just used a big spoon and my hands and mixed it all together. Kie was a big help in this process. He loved playing in the detergent.
3. Finally, I put the detergent in containers. You could buy a container and label it, but I just kept some old plastic containers for this purpose. I don’t require fancy labels, I know what’s in it, but if you’re into making it cute…be my guest. All you need is 1 tablespoon per load in a High Efficiency washer.
I gave some away the first time I made it and it lasted me 11 months. So, we’re talking laundry detergent for a year for around $24. I can live with that.
